An emergency kit is important to have in your home to help you handle disasters of any sort. It’s relatively simple to create a good kit with everything you need. Your emergency kit should have items in it that will help you handle disasters that have the possibility of happening where you live.

Consider Your Location

To create a useful emergency kit, you need to think about what kind of disasters can happen where you live. For instance, if tornadoes or hurricanes are common, you need to make a kit that will help you get through these specific emergencies. Regardless, there are several items that always should be a part of a home emergency kit.

Make a First-Aid Kit

Every emergency kit needs a first-aid kit in it. First-aid kits are needed to help you or your family in case they are injured. This kit should have bandages and gauze to wrap up any wounds or scratches. Also, a cleansing and sterilizing item should be in the kit. Soap works well, and antibiotic ointment should also be a part of the kit. A knife can be used in several emergency situations.

Kit Essentials:

Water

Your emergency kit needs to have water in it. Water is a necessity that no one can live without, so make sure you have enough drinkable water in your emergency kit to last for several days; if a disaster strikes, you need to be prepared.

Non-Perishable Foods

Perishable foods won’t last long, so you need to make sure your emergency kit has a good supply of foods that will not perish. Also have a can opener in this kit as well. The food in your kit should include fruits, healthy meats, and vegetables.

Flashlights

When an emergency occurs or disaster strikes, your house could lose electricity. If this happens, you will need flashlights. Candles are not ideal because they could cause fires. Try to get flashlights that are self powered, but if you have to buy battery-operated ones, make sure to stock up on many batteries for your kit. Radios or other devices are important for your kit, too.

Gather all items you believe you will need during an emergency. First, look through your house to see if you already have some items, and go to the store to buy any emergency items you don’t have yet. Make a checklist of items and create your kit. It could save your life.

Moving can be a stressful event and often people discover many items they no longer want or need when packing up. Or maybe they are moving to a smaller place and have to downsize. If you are moving and have items you need to get rid of, a moving sale is a great way to sell your unwanted items and make some money. Here are some moving sale tips to help you get the most out of your sale.

1/ Chose some things to sell.

This can be difficult for some people. It is understandable to be sentimental about certain items. Take your time and try to detach from your emotions. Ask yourself; do you really need to keep this item? When was the last time I used it? Are you using it now or just holding on to it? Remember sometimes it is better to leave the past behind and start the new life with new additions and purchases.

Also, while choosing what to sell, pick out those things that are not that old, because people will buy them, after all. If there is something you can do to make your things look better before the sale you will get more money for them if you repair them or decorate them. You will have to decide if it is worth doing that or not.

2/ Pick the date for your sale.

We strongly recommend you to do it at least a month before you move, because the closer the day comes, the more the stress and the to-do list increase. You may want to advertise the sale in advance – stick some pamphlets in front of the local post office or the supermarket to help spread the word.

3/ Be realistic in your pricing.

Although you want to make as much money as possible, you have to be realistic in your pricing. People will also want to barter with you so be prepared for it. Try not to be offended when someone offers you $1.00 for something you have priced at $10.00. It will happen. You can have fun with it and barter, or hold firm with your price; the choice is yours.

3/ Arrange your sale creatively and artistically.

Use some old table and furniture to arrange the items and decorate with fresh flowers. You may even prepare some homemade lemonade or cookies and treat the buyers.

Remember to have fun with it. Use your moving sale as a chance to goodbye to your neighbors and make a little extra money.

Moving is always a disrupting experience. Finding an appealing place for your favorite piece of furniture can take time and thought after moving into a new place. You can avoid the trouble of re-positioning your furnishings by taking a few steps at the beginning of your decorating task.

Find the Traffic Patterns

Each home has a distinct traffic pattern for each room. Determining the traffic flow in each room of the house is a primary aid in finding the right configuration for the furniture in that room. These patterns will naturally present other areas for activities. The placement of windows will indicate good natural light reading, work areas and other tasks. Furnishing used for relaxing and conversation should be kept away from major traffic paths to prevent distractions.

Determine a Room’s Focal Point

A focal point can be a fireplace, a large window with a view or even a wall that naturally draws the eye and cries out for an interesting piece of furniture, a painting or bank of shelves with objects d’art. This is the point around which you must build your decorating design. You can discover the right furniture placement the first time by concentrating on the large pieces and let smaller items stay out of the way until you find the most attractive configuration. It may be a good idea to keep some items out of the way in a storage unit until you find the most comfortable, and aesthetic placement of furniture around the focal point. You can then add items as needed to complete the decorating scheme. Avoid cluttering the focal point. This situation is a case when less is definitely more.

Assign Dual Purpose Rooms

Locate the rooms that are likely to have more than one function for you and your family. These may be family rooms, dining rooms, living rooms or even bedrooms. The computer is a ubiquitous item in every home. Locate a place where it can be used conveniently without dominating the look of the room. Family rooms may be play areas, entertainment rooms and study areas. Concentrate storage units in this room and others where multiple activities may be done. Storage units can help to prevent clutter and maintain the decor of the room.

Arrange Most-Used Rooms First

To avoid re-decorating your new home later, tackle the most important rooms first. Kitchens are critical to household activities. The family room may be the room where your family spends most its time. Put these rooms at the top of your decorating list. Bedrooms and bathrooms can be refined later.

If, for example, a toilet’s water tank should crack while you are at work, it could ruin some very expensive items. It might even impact the neighbors. One way to help mitigate this and other disasters is to purchase home content insurance or renter’s insurance. However, as with other forms or protection, there are some things to keep in mind when considering it.

What to consider when buying renter’s insurance

Purchasing the wrong type or insufficient renter’s insurance will be a waste of money and provide little if any protection when something goes wrong. Below are some tips to keep in mind when shopping around for a policy.

*The cost – Take an inventory of the possessions in the residence and determine a total value. If they don’t make a conscious effort to estimate the value of their possessions, most people tend to undervalue them. Be sure to include jewelry, electronics, clothing, personal appliances and furniture. Once the value has been estimated, decide whether it is worth it to pay for renter’s insurance. Someone just starting out with few possessions may not need a policy. Those with several electronic devices will certainly want one. Estimating the value of possessions will also help determine the value of the policy that will be needed.

*Location – Consider the location of the residence and whether it is susceptible to natural disasters such as earthquakes or floods. If so, normal renter’s insurance will not cover these events and additional coverage will be required.

*Deductibles – Higher deductibles will result in lower monthly payments, but that also means more out of pocket expenses if something should happen. Think about how much can be afforded each month, but also consider where the money will come from to pay expenses until the deductible is reached.

*Know what’s covered – While personal possessions likely will be covered by renter’s insurance when disaster strikes, other items, such as a car, glassware, art, porcelain and animals will be excluded. In addition, it is important to review the policy to find out what sort of events warrant protection.

*Inventory and photos – When going around and estimating the value of possession, take the time to write out an inventory of items and photograph them. Keep them in a safe place in case disaster strikes. This will make it easier to demonstrate to the insurance company what was lost. Be sure to add items to the list, with photographs, when new ones are purchased.

Many renters make the mistake of assuming they will be covered under their landlord’s insurance if something should go wrong in their residence. While it may seem like an unnecessary expense, especially for a woman on a single income, it will come in very handy if a disaster strikes. By keeping the tips above in mind when shopping for a policy, the right coverage can be found, the cost can be kept low and claims can be nearly effortless.

Claire Atkinson thinks it is important for women to make sure they have adequate coverage for their possessions when living in a rental property. She writes for an insurance comparison site, which you can visit to compare renters insurance at Kanetix.

If your 1970s-era kitchen is getting you down, you may be toying with the idea of doing a complete remodel. While a new kitchen can both add value to your home and make cooking less of a chore, there are several huge errors that many homeowners make when remodeling their kitchens. Here are the three worst offenses and how to avoid them.

Going Over the Top or Under the Bar

If you own a cute little Craftsman or a rambling row house, putting in a sixty thousand dollar kitchen is not only wasteful, it will potentially scare off future buyers who just want a standard, cozy kitchen to cook dinner in each day. While granite countertops and all stainless steel appliances are considered the standard of beauty in today’s fashion, many people find keeping such materials stain- and fingerprint-free a hassle. Unless you are set on having the kitchen of your dreams and are also willing to accept that you may not regain your investment upon selling your home, choosing less-expensive materials may be a far better plan.

Conversely, those who own expensive homes in swank neighborhoods will do good to choose kitchen accouterments that are in line with their neighbors. If your home is the only one on the block without a gorgeous tile floor and an island with an integrated sink, it may hurt you when it comes time to sell.

Painting with Flat Paint

In a kitchen, fingerprints, splatters and spills are commonplace. The walls and ceiling must be able to withstand many vigorous cleanings before painting becomes necessary again. However, some people will inexplicably paint their kitchen with flat paint. Not only does this show every single speck of grease, it comes off as you scrub. This leaves a dull spot. Not only is this unsightly, but it will necessitate repainting far sooner than if you had used semi-gloss paint instead.

Awkward Layouts

If your kitchen is large, there is a reason the stove and sink are usually close together. Some people, in a fit of design fever, decide to reconfigure the layouts of their kitchen in such a way that requires anyone cooking in it to prance back and forth between the sink and the stove repeatedly. Make sure that opening the refrigerator door does not obstruct the way to the stove. Also make sure that you can open the dishwasher door and the refrigerator and the oven without any of the doors hitting one another. While this may seem obvious, these design flaws exist in countless homes where kitchen remodels went wrong.

Remodeling your kitchen can be a stressful endeavor. By paying attention to these tips, you can avoid a costly and embarrassing mistake in your quest for a better kitchen.
